Sound Science

But Don't panic it's ALL good

But Don’t panic it’s ALL good

Sound healing what it is and why it works.

Quantum physics is beginning to catch up to what the ancients always knew, that is that the universe and all therein contained, is made up of energy. Solidity is an illusion. as all matter is merely energy, resonating at a frequency that allows our frequency to interact with it and perceive through our senses, thereby imaging that energy, to be a solid form.

Quantum physics is the newer science of how the universe “works,” and it is based upon the whole Universe being a creation made out of energy. In contrast, the outdated version of how the Universe worked, Newtonian physics, emphasized the role of matter as separate from energy.

In the old Newtonian physics version of life, cells are made out of pieces of matter (molecules) and could only be influenced by other pieces of matter (molecules such as hormones or drugs). The newer insights on molecules offered by quantum physics reveals that molecules are units of vibrating energy that can be influenced by both matter and invisible energy waves (harmonic resonance). Constructive interference (i.e., good vibes) and destructive interference (i.e., bad vibes) can control the movements of protein molecules.

Since life is derived from the movement of protein molecules, then it’s understandable how energy fields influence life by causing molecules to change shape [ Dr Bruce Lipton PHD,Cell Biologist / Geneticist excerpt from Radio interview and His book the Biology of Belief]]

Bruce Lipton, Ph.D., author of the books “The Biology of Belief” and “Spontaneous Evolution.”  is no flighty New-Ager; earlier in his career he worked as a cell biologist and professor at the National Institutes of Health, Stanford and the University of Wisconsin, among others. It was actually the experience of scientifically cloning cells that convinced Lipton that the way we view healing [ in allopathic medicine] is wrong

Originally, science thought that atoms were made up of smaller particles of matter (electrons, neutrons, and protons), however modern physicists found that these subatomic particles were actually immaterial energy vortices (resembling nano-scaled tornados). In truth, atoms are made out of energy and not physical matter. So everything that we thought was physical matter is in reality made up of focused energy waves or vibrations.

Therefore the whole Universe is actually made out of energy, and what we perceive as matter is also energy. The collective energy waves of the Universe, which might be referred to as “invisible moving forces,” comprise the field (for more information see Lynne MacTaggart’s book, The Field).

While quantum physics recognizes the energetic nature of the Universe, biology has never really incorporated the role of invisible moving forces in its understanding of life. Biology still perceives of the world in terms of Newtonian physical molecules, pieces of matter that assemble like locks and keys. Biochemistry emphasizes that life functions result from the binding of physical chemicals similar to an image of puzzle pieces plugging into each other.

Such a belief insists that if we want to change the operation of the biological machine then we must change its chemistry. This belief system emphasizing “chemistry” leads to a healing modality that focuses upon the use of drugs…allopathic medicine. However, conventional medicine is no longer scientific in that it still emphasizes the Newtonian idea of a mechanistic world and does not recognize the role of the invisible moving forces that comprise the world of quantum mechanics.

In physics there is an understanding that if two things have the same energy vibrations, they share “harmonic resonance,” meaning that when one vibrates it causes the other to vibrate. For example, when a vocalist can sing the right note, one in tune with the atoms in a crystal goblet, their voice (vibration) can cause the goblet to shatter. The energy of the voice combines with the energy of the goblet’s atoms and the two energies become so powerful together, it causes the goblet’s atoms to fly apart and break the glass.

Some energies when added together become constructive, that is the two energies are summed together producing a more powerful vibratory energy. However, two energy waves can interact and cancel each other out, so when combined, the power of the combined energies become 0. In humans, when energies are constructive and give more power, we actually physically experience these energies “good vibes.” However, when two energies cancel each other out, we experience this energetically weakened state as “bad vibes.”

Microwave oven energy vibrations “harmonically resonant” to certain food molecules cause them to move faster which results in food getting hot. Noise canceling earphones (e.g., made by Bose company) generate vibrational frequencies that are “destructive” (out of phase) to ambient noise frequencies and this causes the background sounds to be cancelled-out and the sound disappears. Biologists are now finding that biological functions and molecules can be controlled using harmonic vibratory frequencies, including light and sound vibrations.

It is necessary that biology incorporate an understanding of energetics and energy fields, because energy waves profoundly influence matter. A great quote by Albert Einstein states: “The field is the sole governing agency of the particle.” Einstein is saying that the invisible forces (the field) are responsible for shaping the material world (the particle). To understand the character of a person’s body or health, one must consider the role of the invisible energetic field as a primary influence. The problem is that conventional medicine has not really acknowledged that the field even exists, although the “influence of invisible moving forces” has been demonstrated in published scientific articles for over fifty years.

The conventional model of medicine based upon Newtonian physics has provided for miracles such as heart transplants and reconstructive surgeries AND THAT’S WONDERFUL. However, conventional allopathic medical sciences do not know how cells actually work and are still inappropriately emphasizing the role of genes in controlling our lives and health issues. Biomedicine is still steeped in a mechanistic, material universe. Medical science focuses its attention on the physical body and material world and have completely ignored the role quantum mechanics.

Once medicine starts to understand and acknowledge the influences of energy fields as important, influential determinants, they will then have a more realistic picture of how life works. Simply stated, conventional medicine alone is not truly scientific in that it does not invoke the Universe mechanisms recognized by quantum physics.’’

Many therapists and doctors are demonstrating the powerful effect of vibrational healing

Whilst Sound healing is often heralded as a new modality, it is far from the case. Chanting / singing / drumming / toning / music sound has always played a part in ALL cultures across the planet to heal and soothe; and up until the onset as what is referred to as Modern Medicine some 150 years ago, was a recognised and integrated form of healing all over the world.

So why don’t we hear all about it in the main stream media.  Dr Lipton states The problem lies in the fact that conventional biology does not emphasize the physics of quantum energy fields in understanding the mechanics of the cell.  Therefore when the topic of “energy” healing is discussed, conventional science ignores it as irrelevant because it is not in their textbooks.

Unfortunately for conventional medicine, the newer scientific insights into how molecules move and generate life are recognizing the powerful role of energy fields in shaping the structure and behavior of matter, factors that control life. [ Dr Bruce Lipton PHD]

For us [ SOUNDBEINGS ] this is akin to science thinking the earth was flat until they were happy with the proof that it wasn’t. The fact that, that fact wasn’t integrated initially, didn’t make the planet any less spherical. In the same way that just because in the main stream, tools aren’t available to measure all the frequencies talked about , doesn’t make those frequencies any less real or influential.

We have no doubt many doctors and scientists will readily accept quantum physics, as the evidence is irrefutable. It is the subsequent translation and application into medical practices and principles that then completely evaporates all what was once held as true. That’s a big leap for many to make and one the drug companies and some in religious positions of power feel is a step too far. As once the practicalities of the quantum science field are applied that then takes all boundaries away as we all realise the power of our own being, our own energy and the influence we have upon ourselves and creating matter.

So how does this fit in / affect SOUND HEALING / SOUND THERAPY ?

Although called SOUND therapy it is really as much, if not more, about the vibrational effect upon each person. As is evident from quantum physics, we are all in fact a vibrational frequency comprising of varying frequencies from each organ / cell / system combining to make a perfect harmony, that is when we are in balance.

Think of an orchestra; each section tunes to a different key , then when all in tune plays perfectly and harmoniously. In each section however the instruments are sufficiently unique to become acceptable within the desired key, but have a distinct tome of their own, just like each one of us.

This is not a new phenomena by any means and sound is a natural and crucial part of our existence, in fact all vibrations have a sound, whether our ears can hear it or not, when we are healthy were are harmonious, and  in our language we even refer to SOUND health. This is no accident.

In the Sufi lineage, it has been described in detail in the poems of Rumi, and the writings of Kabir and Hafiz. In the Western mystery schools it was revealed by Pythagoras,  Socrates and Plato, to name but a few.

These teachings describe a ‘souljourn’ that is laid out within the template of our own bodies, and is therefore universal. It is a true science of sacred sound which is precise in its application, yet non-denominational in approach.

The Cosmic Octave

In 1978 Hans Cousto, a Swiss mathematician and musicologist discovered the natural law of the “Cosmic Octave” as the link between different kinds of perodically occurring natural phenomena, such as the orbit of the planets, the weather, colors, rhythms and tones.

The sounds of the ancient tools we use, Planetary Gongs[ i.e gongs tuned precisely to the frequencies of the planets – See Hans Custo ‘The Cosmic Octave’ and PAISTE who hand make the gongs] Didgeridoos, drums, Tibetan singing bowls, crystal bowls, tuning forks and much more , and the vibratory effect upon the being, on all levels mental , emotional Physcial is profound and transformational.

Dr Mitchell Gaynor, Dr. Mitchell Gaynor, Director of Medical Oncology and Integrative Medicine at Strang-Cornell Cancer Prevention Center. Author of “The Healing Power of Sound: Recovery from Life-Threatening Illness using Sound, Voice, and Music

“Sound healing is one of the oldest, if not the oldest forms of healing on this planet and up until the onset of “modern medicine ‘ about 150 years ago was considered normal and used regularly and effectively”.

“Sound can redress imbalances on every level of physiologic functioning and can play a positive role in the treatment of virtually any medical disorder “.

Dr Gaynor uses Sound Therapy with his cancer patients and at a hospital in Toronto a friend of ours was offered sound therapy [ with an electronic device ] to treat his prostate cancer [ albeit it at a princely sum of money].

Ultra Sound scans / ECG / MRI/ have been common place for some time – these all measure frequency within the body. Ultra sound has been used to break down kidney stones for many years and in many hospitals in Europe Ultra Sound is used to destroy and break down soft tissue tumours – without any side effect to the patients and at a fraction of the cost of chemotherapy.

Fabien Maman [musician, composer, acupuncturist, author, researcher, teacher, “bio -energetician]  explored and documented the influence of sound waves on the cells of the body in the early 1980s. He and Helene Grimal studied the effects of low volume sound (30-40 decibels) on human cells. They mounted a camera on a microscope where they had placed slides of human uterine cancer cells; and then proceeded to play various acoustical instruments (guitar, gong, xylophone as well as voice) for periods of twenty-minutes, while they observed the effects on the cells

“The structure quickly disorganized. Fourteen minutes was enough time to explode the cell when I used these  The vibration of sound literally transforms the cell different frequencies”, Later, as I worked in sound research, utilizing experiments with cells under the influence of sound, I realized the importance of the quality of the harmonics, and how different it is, between these two sources of sound,(acoustic versus synthetic) when it comes to measuring the impact of  resonance into human cells. I discovered that the real power of using sound for healing resides only in the harmonics, not in the sound itself.  So only acoustic instruments (not electric or electronic) can be used for Sound healing! They discovered that the human voice and gongs are 2 of the most significant harmonic healers, having success with cancer patients.

Our Beautiful Earth

Our Beautiful Earth Gong

For those interested in the harmonics and the math of the music there is more on this at the end of this piece.

On the physical, sound has the ability to rearrange molecular structure. This is a scientific fact. As we know, everything in the universe is in a state of vibration, from the chair you may be sitting in to the pages of a magazine, and the key board / screen in front of you.

When we are in a state of health, all these bodily parts are working together in harmony, creating an overall harmonic of health. If one of these parts begins to vibrate at a different rate, this is what we call disease.

“If we accept that sound is vibration, and we know that vibration touches every part of our physical being, then we understand that sound is “heard” not only through our ears but through every cell in our body,” writes Gaynor, who reminds us that the human body is 90 percent water-the perfect medium for carrying sound

He is not the only Western-trained scientist who believes in sound healing. In the early 1950s, French physician Alfred A. Tomatis found that certain sounds enhanced or drained the brain’s energy. Working with a diverse array of aural stimuli-a mother’s voice, Gregorian chants, and classical music, for example-Tomatis reversed learning disabilities and attention deficit disorder in his young patients.

In a more recent study, 30 minutes of music therapy produced the same effect as 10 milligrams of Valium on critical-care heart patients, reports Raymond Bahr, M.D., the director of coronary care at St. Agnes Hospital in Baltimore.

“We know that sounds are stimulating and we also have the technology to be able, in fact, to recharge people with them.”  –Dr.Alfred Tomatis, Surgeon, Sound Researcher and Author

Other studies on the effects of sound on matter [ really nothing more than vibratory frequencies] have been done and Cymatics, [the study of wave phenomena] is worth a read.

This was pioneered in the 1950s by the late Swiss scientist, Dr Hans Jenny. Following the work of German physicist and acoustician, Ernst F. F. Chladni, who, towards the end of the 18th century, created intricate sand patterns by vibrating a steel plate with a violin bow, Dr Jenny employed the modern technology of the day to carry out more precisely replicable experiments.

Each note produces a distinct pattern, the same each time

Each note produces a distinct pattern, the same each time

Using a sine wave generator and a speaker to vibrate various powders, pastes and liquids, Jenny succeeded in making visible the subtle power through which sound structures matter. These phenomena vividly reveal certain universal principles which lend credence to the proliferation of sound therapies that are rapidly emerging at the forefront of the holistic health movement [ Another example of the blending of ancient wisdom with the discoveries and practical applications of modern science?

In the video Of Sound Mind and Body: Music and Vibrational Healing, biologist Rupert Sheldrake describes our bodies as ‘nested hierarchies of vibrational frequencies’ which appear as discrete systems functioning within larger more complicated systems, which themselves are contained within even larger and more complex vibrational structures.

This process was first articulated in 1656 when Dutch mathematician, physicist, and astronomer, Christian  Huygens, performed an unusual series of Insights “Despite our discomfort with discord and disharmony, chaos appears to play an essential role in the process of growth and evolution.”

He found that randomly swinging pendulums of similar lengths would begin to swing in unison after a period of time. After extensive observation, he formulated the principle of entrainment to describe this phenomenon where weaker pulsations come under the influence of stronger ones. [ See  also Bruce Lipton Biology of Belief ]

Some 300 years later, British naturopath Dr Peter Guy Manners applied this same principle to treat a variety of physiological conditions. Positing that every form, with its unique shape, size and density, vibrates within its own specific range of frequencies, Manners correlated the resonant frequencies of healthy tissues and organs. He devised a way to project these vibrations via sound waves, directly into the body to rebalance and restore [ re harmonize the cells].

Dr June Leslie Wieder [ The Song Of the Spine ] through detailed research . discovered the frequency of each vertebrae and corresponding musical note in the pentatonic scale.

There are also well-established practices which require no sophisticated equipment other than our own nervous system. For example, the beat frequencies associated with states of deep meditation are quite prevalent in such ancient ritual instruments as Tibetan singing bowls. These pulsations tend to quiet brainwave activity from our more normally active Beta states (around 14 – 20Hz) to the Theta and Delta states where predominant brainwave activity may drop to a range from 8Hz to as low as 0.5Hz in the deepest meditative states. Sound Therapy is a new exciting field with the potential to completely shift our heath care paradigm and is boundless in its potential ramifications. Sound can redress imbalances on every level of physiologic functioning and can play a positive role in the treatment of virtually any medical disorder.” Dr. Mitchell Gaynor, Dir. of Medical Oncology and Integrative Medicine at Strang-Cornell Cancer Prevention Center, NY

Sound healing; What Is It and How It Works.

Throughout time and across all cultures, music and sound have been an integral part of ceremony and ritual and have played a significant role in the healing of humankind. In every cosmology and mythology, sound is a major link, the carrier wave between the world of spirit and the people of Earth.

Today, music and sound continue to be significant tools for healing. Whilst Sound healing is often heralded as a new modality, it is far from the case. Up until the onset of what is referred to as Modern Medicine some 150 years ago, sound healing was a recognized and integrated form of healing all around the world.

Chanting / singing / drumming / toning / music and sound have always played a part in ALL cultures across the planet to heal and soothe. Increasingly, healing practices employing sound and music, once validated only by custom or anecdotal support, are being confirmed by findings from a wide variety of scientific studies.

When we are healthy we are harmonious and in the English language we refer to this as being of “sound health”. This is no accident.

On the physical, sound has the ability to rearrange molecular structure. This is a scientific fact. When we are in a state of health all these bodily parts are working together in harmony, creating an overall harmonic of health. If one of these parts begins to vibrate at a different rate, this is what we call disease.

It is a true science of sacred sound which is precise in its application, yet non-denominational in approach.

When a client comes to us for a healing session they are bathed in a cosmic and ancient frequencies that allow the cells to re balance and re harmonise. [ see Private sessions ]

We demonstrate the effect of the frequencies using water and sound [ video uploaded soon ]. The client usually finds the sounds relaxing and de stressing, which in itself is a major contributory factor toward improving well being; when we are relaxed our immune system works more efficiently, blood pressure reduces, heart rate slows, endomorphins [endomorphins participate in modulating nociceptive [ stimulus that causes pain] and autonomic nervous system processes and responsiveness to stress] to kick in. Making the client feel relaxed and less stressed and reducing any pain.

On a deeper level the frequencies affect each individual on a cellular level [ see notes on Fabien Maman et al], also the vibratory effects oscillate and vibrate the cells encouraging  the cell to release toxins and intake nutrients. Our clients are advised to drink lots of fresh water and  avoid alcohol for at least 24 hours whilst their body reacts to the detoxification that is taking place. The audible sounds also affect brainwave activity and bring about a deep state of relaxation, and have been seen to bring great clarity and creativity.

Gaynor says, “Sound enters the healing equation from several directions: It may alter cellular functions through energetic effects; it may entrain biological systems to function more homeostatic ally; it may calm the mind and therefore the body; or it may have emotional effects, which influence neurotransmitters and neuropeptides, which in turn help to regulate the immune system–the healer within.”

In addition to all this, it is a unique and amazing experience for each individual, and has been shown to have profound and lasting, effects.

WORKING WITH BUSINESS / Schools / Colleges/ Universities etc

When working with business, and group, we are able to share and teach simple and very effective, stress management techniques to all. Whilst , in modern day life we can not always remove the cause of a stress, we can all learn ways to manage the effects of stress and reduce and remove it’s detrimental effect. Our unique approach and method, engages individuals has a positive effect on their own well being and consequently improves business delivery, through reducing sick leave and improving focus, memory and engendering a greater sense of well being. In a learning environment, in addition to reducing stress it has been shown to aid memory and cognitive thinking.

Bespoke programs and events offer a unique and powerful way to help have a healthy person and a healthy organization.

If you are not familiar with musical intervals, think of the song ‘Bali Hi’
and you’ll have the sound of this magical interval. Research mentions that
the first time Beethoven used this interval, the consciousness of the
audience literally ‘exploded’.

Some findings from research by Fabien Maman, one of our top researchers into the mysteries of the Sound Current:

Fabien says that the seventh interval creates extreme tension, but it is not a paralysing tension like the second interval. It is a healthy tension that provokes a growth in consciousness. Beethoven was the first Western composer to use this interval. Hector Berlioz, in his biography of Beethoven, said that the first time Beethoven’s music was played in the Paris Opera House, the consciousness of the audience ‘exploded’.

Ravel also used the interval of the seventh. Jazz composers such as John Coltrane began to use this interval in the 1960’s, a time of great social change.
“The seventh musical interval represents the ultimate dissonance before resolution into the stillness of the octave. It has a powerful purpose in physical, musical and spiritual evolution.”
In his experiments Fabien found that it was generally the seventh interval that destroyed the cancer cells. As the notes of the scale was played to the cancer cells in test tubes they began to break up when the notes A# and B were played. The effect was particularly strong when metal instruments were used. He says that this reveals the power of the seventh interval to affect change at the cellular level. “

“The cancer cells could not bear the dissonance of the seventh interval. Throughout the experiment the cancer cells appeared rigid, inflexible, and seemed to fight each note of the musical scale until they finally exploded around the addition of the seventh interval. Healthy cells, because they could breathe in the resonance of the sound, remained intact and some even seemed to be revitalised by the addition of the seventh interval.”

“The seventh interval will be resolved into the stillness and peace of a new octave, which will provide a mirror for civilisation to come. The seventh interval pushes us towards expansion to a higher octave of inner peace, not a conceptual ‘return’ to a nostalgic memory. Even the most  enlightened master cannot escape completely the vibration of the musical interval in which he or she lives. We all belong to the sound current of our moment in time.” – Fabien Maman

Fabien Maman says an interval is the resonance of the musical space created by the sounding of two notes simultaneously or separately. Each interval has a different vibratory effect upon our body, mind and emotions.
The fundamental ‘interval’ is the resonance of one note played twice. This interval is found in mantras. Most mantras are chanted on a monotone – one note. After a few minutes of repeating the same word or words on one note the mind becomes quiet. This ‘interval’ brings immobility, rest and old memories.
The interval of the second creates a tension. It is difficult to hold this interval for a long time. This interval brings tension between two polarities, creating movement. The interval of the second is used in Modern Classical music, which uses strong dissonance. This dissonance will be even greater with a minor second interval e.g. C-D flat.
The interval of the third touches the emotions. Bach used this interval to touch the higher emotions. It can produce feelings of lightness, strength and joy. Country and Western music uses the minor third e.g. C-E flat to touch the heavier emotions such as sadness or heartache.
Fabien Maman says that the fourth interval gives a strange impression that is like awakening after a dream. “The startling effect of this interval is felt powerfully in Bulgarian women’s chants.” “When the fourth is augmented (e.g. C-F#), the left and right sides of the brain are stimulated. The augmented fourth is the interval heard in the sound of the Tibetan bowl. This extreme tension is maintained until resolution in the fifth interval.”
Fabien Maman says that, “The fifth interval expands in all directions and provokes the widest
movement of energy in space. It can be heard in Brazilian music where there is often the interval of the fifth between guitar and voice.”
“Because of its stimulating nature, the cycle of fifths can be used both to concentrate and align chakra energies. The following order can be used to relax the body and bring about the maximum expansion of consciousness: – F C G D A E B.” (Each note being five notes above the last) According to Fabien two people whose fundamental vibrations create an interval of the fifth will have a stimulating relationship. A couple whose fundamental vibrations create the interval of the fourth or the second will have a relationship filled with dissonance and conflict.

The sixth interval is the sweetest interval. Fabien Maman says that listening to the sixth interval is “like receiving the quintessence of the fragrance of an opening flower.” This interval is generally used in children’s lullabies. The sixth interval seems to carry no weight, no tension, no stimulation and no emotional heaviness. The sixth interval creates a feeling of total opening, of offering yourself to the universe, contrary to the third interval, which is contained.
